Mobile Phones, Focus, and the Winner’s Mentality

Last Sunday morning, during our workout, we spoke about something that matters just as much as fitness: focus. We talked about how mobile phones, while useful, can also become a major distraction — especially for someone chasing big dreams, like becoming a professional footballer.

To make this real, we watched an interview between Michael Owen and Rio Ferdinand. Both former England players explained how staying focused, avoiding distractions, and giving your very best at all times were key to their success. These lessons apply not just to football, but to life.

The Dangers of Mobile Phone Distraction

Here are a few things studies show about mobile phones that every 13-year-old (and parent) should know:

  • Sleep: Teens who spend more than 2 hours a day on phones are more likely to have poor sleep, which affects performance in school and sport.
  • Concentration: Research shows even having a phone nearby can lower attention levels — your brain keeps wondering if a notification is coming.
  • Confidence: Too much social media scrolling can lead to comparing yourself with others, which can hurt self-belief.

For an athlete, this isn’t just about schoolwork. Losing focus can cost you your sharpness on the pitch — those extra seconds of reaction time, the positioning, the ability to read the game.

Lessons From Africa

During our trip to Nigeria, you saw firsthand how children your age, and younger, live with much less. Remember the young girl at the traffic light, the one you gave money to? Do you remember how, within seconds, other children surrounded our car, hoping for the same?

That moment showed us two things:

  1. Many kids around the world don’t get the opportunities you have.
  2. You are blessed with football talent, family support, and education — things many children would do anything for.

That’s why wasting time on distractions like mobile phones is a luxury you cannot afford.

 Football, Setbacks, and Growth

This past week brought ups and downs:

  • You missed a friendly where your team won 5–0 against last season’s champions.
  • On Sunday, you didn’t start, played less than 30 minutes, and even had a goal disallowed.
  • A teammate who had bet against you this season scored, and you showed maturity by celebrating his goal instead of sulking.

Son, that maturity impressed me deeply. It shows you are growing as both a player and a young man. But remember — these moments are part of the journey. Missing games, being disappointed, or having goals disallowed are tests. Winners don’t just shine when everything goes their way; they prove themselves in the tough moments.

 Learning From Kobe Bryant

We’ve been studying Kobe Bryant recently. His “Mamba Mentality” was simple:

  • Work harder than everyone else.
  • Never let distractions get in the way.
  • Compete with pride every single day.

That’s the mentality I want you to carry into your academy training and weekend matches.

My Promise and Yours

As your dad, I am prepared to go over and beyond to support your football journey — the travel, the training, the sacrifices. But you need to match my effort. That means:

  • Controlling distractions like mobile phones.
  • Taking pride in every training session.
  • Approaching each match knowing it’s another step in your journey.
  • Giving your best at all times, no excuses.

Final Word

You don’t become a professional footballer by accident. It takes focus, sacrifice, and consistency. You’ve already shown maturity and progress since we returned from Nigeria. Now, it’s about taking your winner’s mentality to the next level.

Every time you’re tempted to waste an hour on your phone, remember this:

  • Somewhere, another kid is outworking you.
  • Somewhere, another player is sharpening his skills.
  • And somewhere, a coach is watching to see who really wants it.

Make sure you are that player.

For parents reading: mobile phones can be incredible tools, but for young athletes, they can also be dream-stealers. Let’s help our kids set boundaries, stay focused, and chase their goals with pride.
